Harley Davidson Softail

The Harley family of motorcycles has prided themselves on tradition and style. The Softail model of the Harley Davidson motorcycles is one such example of following the roots of tradition at Harley. This is the big twin motorcycle that is visually similar to the Hardtail bikes that were commonly called the choppers and were popular during the 60s and the 70s. In keeping the old tradition of ensuring style and quality, Harley offers the Softail family that has springer front ends and design.

A Softail is defined as a bike which has a suspension system present at its rear end which is also moveable in nature. It has springs that allow a smooth ride. The shock absorbers prevent the bike from any kind of bumps and thus facilitate a smooth ride. The term ‘Softail’ was evolved at the Harley Company with the launch of the first FXST Softail in 1984. Since then, every bike with rear suspension has been added to the family of Harley Davidson Softail. The rear suspension in the Softail is hidden. This gives the bike a Hardtail look from which it has evolved. In the Harley Davidson Softail the bike has been given the look of the Hardtail from its past but it still allows a comfortable suspension at the rear, which probably was not present in the Hardtail. The bike has a number of preventive systems which are located along the profile of the bike and are also carefully hidden. These are shock absorbing devices.

The Softail family has expanded multi folds over the years and has many new models added to it. The addition of these models has made it even more endearing and fascinating for its fans. The new models have the same engine and transmission but they differ in small ways like the choice of fork, accessories and wheels which sets them apart on the basis of style and persona they have of their own. These models include the Softail standard and custom models. The Night Train model and the Deluxe, Deuce, Fat Boy also have been a part of this family.

The Softail is one of the most commonly used bikes of the Harley Davidson line up. The Softail has evolved from the past and has some new features added to it that gives it an edge above the other models. The evolution of the bike from its previous models is the indication of the improvement in technology that led to its evolution. One such improvement that has been observed in this bike is that the bike des not make use of the rubber mounted engines.

The early models of the Softail family used new technology engines called evolution engines. The more recent models of the Softail do not use the V-twin engine, but rather they use a twin cam engine which is again a cutting edge of technology. The revolutionary bike has made heads turn with its legendary looks and hidden technology which speak volumes of its success on the road.
